97. William[7] Suits (A116). Born, 18 Jan 1791, in PA or NC[73]. Died, 17 Mar 1881, in Dearborn, IN. Extra 4: 1820, in Laughery Twp., Dearborn Co., IN. Census: 1850, in Clay Twp., Dearborn Co., IN. Census: 1860, in Clay Twp., Dearborn Co., IN. Census: 1870, in Clay Twp., Dearborn Co., IN. Occupation: Farmer,blacksmth.The 1820 census listed William "Sootz" in Laughery Township with one boy and two girls less than ten, and one male and one female (William and Catherine) from 26 to 44. One family member was involved in agriculture. In the 1850 census, William was listed as a blacksmith with a taxable value of $2500. Catherine and his children Ralph (listed as a farmer) and America J. were living with him as well as William Odas, 18, a laborer. The 1860 census gave him as a farmer and blacksmith, "Rafe" and his family Ruth, William, and Emma, as well as David and "Remince" Suits lived with him; I think these are Emsley's children. He had a tax value of $1700 and $400. In the 1870 census, William was living with Ralph on a farm, and a Nancy Suits, aged 64.
His son Emsley's death certificate, and the 1870 census, gave his place of birth as Pennsylvania.
There is a War of 1812 record for a William Suit(s), Private, 5 Regiment (Atkinson's) North Carolina Militia. Place of residence, Guilford Co., NC. He enrolled twice, Nov. 28, 1814 to Feb. 26, 1815, and Jan. 9, 1815, pay $8 per month.
History of Ohio and Dearborn Counties: His son Ralph Suits' Biography states that they came from North Carolina in 1816, and resided in Dearborn County until their deaths.
Hughes (1988): A Jacob Sutz acquired land in Guilford Co. in 1787. This land was at E5 on Hughes' map.
