Robert R. Reid, 92, 4211 Backmeyer Road, former Palladium Item advertising manager, died Sunday June 2, at his home.

He was born in Dublin and had lived in this area most of his life. He was employed by the Palladium Item 47 years. He started as a cub reporter at the Palladium in 1921 and had been sports editor, courthouse and city hall reporter, and telegraph editor and was advertising manager from 1936 until retiring in 1968. In the 1930s he was in public relations and promotion work for the newspapaer and promoted a number of civic activities, including the Civic Minstrels on Roosevelt Hill, a parade celebrating the last days of streetcars in Richmond, and the Santa Claus Village on the roof of the Leland Hotel.

He was a former member of the Richmond Kiwanis Club, past exalted ruler and life member of the Elks Lodge and a member of the First Friends Church. He also had been coach of the Richmond Cavaliers, a professional basketball team in the late 1920s.

On Sept 2, 1993 he and his wife Thelma celebrated their 60 wedding anniversary.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Shellenberger Reid; two sons, xxx Reid of Galesburg, Ill. and Dr. xxx Reid of Jacksonville, Fla.; three grandchildren; one niece, several nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Claire, Sterling, and Wayne Reid.

Service will be at 1:30 pm Wednesday, Jan 5, at The Jones Funeral Home, with Charles Thomas of First Friends Church officiating. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9pm Tuesday, Jan 4, at the funeral home.
