Family records from Adelle Hayward say "An Englishman...moved to Indiana and settled in Franklin Co., near Contreras, Ohio." Daughter's death certificate says he was born in Germany. In the 1880 census, Matilda's father was listed as born in "Main."
Randolph Co., IN Portrait & Biographical Record: Joel Proctor the father of Dr. Jeremiah A., came from England when a young man, followed carpentering in the state of New York until the outbreak of the War of 1812, when he entered the American Army, fought through the war, and after its close came west, worked at his trade near Oxford, Ohio, and died of cholera in 1832. When a small boy he [Jeremiah] was brought to Indiana by his parents, who settled in Franklin County, on the state line, near Contreras, Ohio, where he attended the common schools and clerked in winter, and assisted on the farm in summer.
