On the 1840 census James Reid was listed with 1 male less than 5, 1 male 10-15, 2 males 15-20, 1 female less than 5, 2 females 5-10, 1 female 10-25, 1 female 15-20, and 1 female 40-50. One family member was engaged in agriculture. In the 1850 census he was listed as a farmer with a tax value of $3000, also "insane." He and Margaret had living with them William and Andrew, farmers, and Margaret and John.

Rockbridge Co., VA, will of William Reed, proved 2 Aug 1819: "I give to my nephew James Reed the farm on which I now live with the reservations above stipulated to him and his heirs forever. I also give to him my negro man Armour with this injunction that if he sells him he is under restriction by no means to sell him to slave driver but to endeavor to select a good master for him, I likewise give him my smiths tools waggon and the other half of my farming utensils."
William left his farm to his wife Agnes during her life, as well as half the farming utensils, all the stock and household goods, and a negro woman named Betsey. At Agnes' death, or at Agnes' will, Betsey and her children were to be freed, and Betsey was to be given 50 acres of land to live on. The negro children were to be supported "That arent able to labour for their living."

Rockbridge Co. Records: "March 6, 1820: Know all me by their presents that we Daniel Reid, Robert Kirkpatrick, William McCampbell & James Reid are held firmly bound unto Thomas M. Randolph governor of the commonwealth of Virginia and his successors in the sum of fifteen hundred dollars...whereas the above bound Daniel Reid has been duly appointed a constable by the court of Rockbridge county, on the Present day of March." James signed the document.

"This Indenture made on the 13th day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred twenty four, by and between James Reid and Margaret Reid his wife of the one part, and Agness Reid of the other part, all of the County of Rockbridge and State of Virginia, Witnesseth: That the said James Reid for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred Dollars in hand paid by the said Agness Reid the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, hath bargained and sold and by these presents doth bargain and sell to the same Agness Reid her heirs, excrs. and admins. one certain tract or parcel of Land, lying and being in the said County, being the land on which Wm Reid formerly resided, and the land devised to the said James Reid by the said William Reid, and neighther more or less than that contained in the said will of the said Wm Reid devised to the said James Reid, bounded on the land side as follows, to wit; Beginning at a button wood on the river south seventy degrees west one hundred forty eight poles to a white oak & Hickory, thence new line south thirty degrees west, two hundred fifty six poles to a poplar & ash on the River, thence up to the Beginning. the several Courses of the River aforesaid. To have and to hold the land above mentioned to the said Agness Reid her heirs and assignees forever. To the only use and behoof of her the said Agness Reid and the said James Reid and Margaret the said described tract of land to the said Agness Reid her heirs ---- &---- will forever warrant & Defend against themselves heirs, --- and ---- and all persons claiming under them and either of them. 9 May 1827 Agnes emancipated, Isabella, a slave. August 8, 1832, Agnes emancipated Dave, age 50, Betsey, 50, George, 24, Sam, 22, Eliza, 19, Julia, 15, William 13, Davy 11, Sally 9, Mary Ann, 7, Nancy 1 1/2. Agnes then paid "Betsy Reid" a free negro for a quit claim to the property, and sold the land.

From Gilbert, Lists 1827-1834: James Reid was on Preble Co. Tax lists for Jefferson Twp. 1827, 1828, 1829, 1830, 1831, 1832, 1833, 1834.

James served as executor for the estate of his brother Adam in 1845.

He left a will, dated 20 Apr 1847, signing with an "X," in the presence of Thomas Baker and Peter Penlands. It was proved March 19, 1856. The executors were William M. and Peggy Reid. To Peggy-Farm, money, personal property that can be used. To five daughters-Balance of personal property ($55 was already received by Polly). Land in Whitley Co., Indiana was also to be sold and divided between the 5. To William-north half of land at wife's death. Andrew- south half of land at wife's death, also half of barn and stable room. Patterson- already has received portion in full. John Kirkpatrick- $50. William and Andrew- Wagon and gearing.

James never sold the land he purchased from William; A.K. Reid's Heirs sold his share of the property to "Reid and Morrison" after his death. William M.'s land was also sold "by heirs" to Marcus E. Reid in 1895.

He married[88] Margaret Kirkpatrick (86) (A105), 6 Oct 1818, in Rockbridge Co., VA[1]. Children:

ii. Polly Ann Reid. Born, circa 1821, in VA[36]. Died, 29 Jul 1904 (?), in Huntington Twp., Huntington Co., IN. Census: 1850, in Huntington Co., IN.
