E. Conrad wrote that he was born in London, England, and died in Dayton, Ohio, 8/21/1881, buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville. He was not listed on any of the Nashville censuses with his wife. Bob Leaman:"buried 26 Jun 1860 in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee....Buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetary. ancestry were military in occupation in English army." James was listed as a shoemaker living on Winchester St.in Southampton, England on John's birth record. John is the only one of the children listed on the transcript 1813-1827. There is another family of shoemaking Lumsdens, headed by Samuel and Eleanor, first at Houndwell Buildings, in 1823, then on Cassack Street, with children born between 1824 and 1832, when Samuel died. Clarence Gennett: "James Lumsden was born in England. Do not have the dates of birth or death, but my understanding is the death took place at Dayton, Ohio and believe the burial was in the Germantown Cemetery of Germantown, Ohio. Later, the entire family moved to Nashville. The home in England was 13 Carlton Crescent, Southampton and was a two story house. "The first typical Lumsden attitude began when great grandfather James married Henrietta Jones and we are told because of this marriage into trade, he was kicked out of the family. The next phase of this development is the report of the destruction of the tannery by fire, supposedly by one of the members of the family." In Campbell's "Nashville Business Directory" of 1857, there are a James and George Lumsden listed as living at the City Tannery, 14 miles SW of the city; this was probably his son. I did not find James Lumsden in the Germantown Cemetary records.
