U.S. Census: In 1830, there were, according to the census form, no males in the household, 1 female less than 5, and one 15-20. The form was difficult to read. They were enumerated next to Joseph Hayward, who was enumerated next to Elihu Crandle. In the 1840 census, he was living with 2 males under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-10, and 1 female 15-20 (probably 20-30.) 1 family member was engaged in manufacture or trade. His tax value was $4000 in the 1850 census, where he is listed as a farmer. They were enumerated next to Elihu Crandel. The 1870 census listed Jacob as a Kansas farmer worth $3000 and $800. He was living with Rebecca and children Herman and Rebecca, who taught school. Their son Elihu lived nearby; one of his children was born in Illinois during the 1860's. In 1880, ---- Hayward had moved to Carson Twp., where he was the postmaster. He and Rebecca were living with their son Herman, a farmer, and Rebecca Hanson, described as a "wife at home." and a teacher. She was "sick or disabled" from "salt rheumitism." Also living with them were her children Elmer (7) and Lula (4), and Robert Eberhard, a laborer, 35, born in New York.

1875 Census, Brown Co., KS: Jacob, Rebecca, and Herman Hayward came to Kansas from Illinois.
Annals of Brown Co., Kansas (1900): 15 Aug 1874, Jacob Hayward was chosen an alternate to the Republican senatorial convention.3 Nov 1875, Jacob Hayward received 79 (?) total votes (36 Tyler Twp, 58 Walnut Twp.) in the Township election for Justice, more votes than the other candidates.6 Nov 1877, Jacob Hayward received 91 (?) total votes (29 Tyler Twp., 32 Walnut Twp.) in the Walnut Twp. election for Justice, more votes than the other candidates.
1875 Census, Brown Co., KS: H.H. Hayward, the only child living with Jacob and Rebecca in 1875, had a Real Estate Value of $2500 and a Personal Property value of $300. No property values were listed for Jacob or Rebecca. He ownes 110 acres, all "under fence." The farm was worth $2500 and implements and machinery $50. There were 240 rods both of ball fence and hedge. 7 acres were planted in winter wheat, 4 rye, 50 corn, and 25 in barley. Herman had 1 acre of timothy meadow, 15 acres of blue grass pasture, and 3 acres of orchard. The family had made 250 pounds of butter during the year. Livestock included 5 horses, 2 milch cows, and 7 swine; livestock slaughtered during the year were worth $18. There were no entries for illiteracy.
According to the 1880 census, both of Jacob's parents were born in Maryland.
Obituary: Died Sep. 22 1884, Mr. Jacob Hayward at Carson. Mr. Hayward was born in Maryland, near Baltimore, Apr 25, 1806. He was Married to Miss Rebecca Crandall, Feb 26, 1828. They moved from Indiana to Missouri in the fall of 1859 and then moved back to Illinois in the fall of 1861, and came to Kansas in the fall of 1865, Mr. Hayward was 78y5m28d, he was buried in the Hiawatha cemetery. Mr. Hayward leaves a wife and 9 children to mourn his loss."
Died. Jacob Hayward, an old and respected citizen of this county, who has served as postmaster at Carson for the past ten years, died Monday, the 22nd, at the advanced age of 78 years.
While attending the funeral of his daughter, Mrs. Reibsomen, about eight weeks ago, he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered. Mr Hayward was born in Maryland,
April 29, 1806 and removed to Kansas 19 years ago. He has lived on his farm at Carson ever since, where he had a comfortable home, and was esteemed by all who knew him. He leaves a
wife, now 72 years of age, and nine children. His remains were brought to Hiawatha, Tuesday, for interment. Rev. D. Dunham officiated at the funeral. He married Rebecca Crandle(94) (A113), 24
