17. Herman Bennett[5] Hackett (Jacob, 35) (A18). Born, 25 Sep 1858, in
Cold Springs, Jefferson, WI. Died, 7 Nov 1947, in Park Rapids, Hubbard,
MN[2]. Census: 1910, in Straight R. Twp., Hubbard Co., MN. Census: 1900,
in North Freedom, Sauk Co., WI. Census: 1880, in Freedom, Sauk Co., WI.
Occupation: Farmer. Individual number 12.
In the 1900 census, Herman and Frances were living with seven children. The 1910 census gave Herman as a farmer. He was living with Frances G. and children Allen C., Alice, X Voncele, and LaMae.
Hackett (1949): "Herman had come to North Freedom with his parents in or about six [sic] and with them also came David Kidd and family, Herman's half-brother who was partner with his father in a threshing machine outfit...It was soon after the death of Herm's mother that he was married and his very efficient and charming wife took over the duties of housekeeper in the home bereft of wife and mother. Before this occurred, Jacob and his two sons Herman and George, had bought 80 acres, or half of the Samuel Hackett homestead and the men were busily engaged getting out and preparing material for building a house for each of the brothers, and for other buildings needed. This strenuous task proved both the ambition and metal of these young men...
"Before the turn of the century things had changed materially in this set-up. George had sold out his interest to Herman and had been induced to go to Watertown, South Dakota where previously, both he and Herm had taken car loads of horses to sell to homesteaders...their father had passed to his reward in 1898 and in 1901 and Herman sold his farm and followed his half brother David Kidd to Park Rapids, Minn., there again to join the pioneers in setting up and improving a new country. He bought a partially improved farm and proceeded to develop it. He had only gotten a good start when fire destroyed their home and most of their personal possessions, but undaunted, he rebuilt and continued on the farm until 1911 when he sold it, moved into Park Rapids, then a small village; took on a stage route from Park Rapids to Itasca State Park. Later he became Street Commissioner of the fast-growing town and also, town Marshall. He served in these capacities for several years.
