79. Henson[7] Estes (A98). Born, 7 Aug 1764, in VA[22]. Died, 2 Dec 1839, in Nashville, Davidson, TN[22]. Census: 1820, in Williamson Co., TN, 211101-32110."The Presto" (7 Nov 1912): "...there began a general exodus of Virginia settlers toward the west. Among those...was Henson Estes, who, with his wife and kinsmen, located near Nashville, Tenn., in 1796."
Carroll Co., TN Chancery, 1828: This was a petition of John Estes of Madison Co., TN, who protested the validity of a will made by his father Samuel Estes. John said that Samuel was not of sound mind when he made the will, which was entered in Madison Co. Included in the personal property were 7 Negroes slaves: Caesar, about 40 years old, dark complexion, about 6 feet; Frank, about 25 years old, light color but not mix blood, about 5 foot 7 or 8 inches; Critt, a wench about 35 years of age and dark complexion. Also her children, about her color: Lewis (8), Bob (6), Sandy (3) and Jane (2). The first 2 were bequeathed in the will to Hinson and the latter to his brother Armstead. The slaves were to have been hired out pending court action. However, the Estes brothers, along with an Abel Willis, had gotten possession of the slaves and had run off with Caesar and Frank, out of the County. John thought they may have been taken to Williamson County, where Hinson lived, or to Madison County, to be sold and then disappear forever. He was afraid Armstead and Willis would take the remaining slaves to Armstead's home in Hickman County or to parts unknown. John wanted the court to put an order on keeping Armstead and Hinson from running off, and to have a bond be placed on them. If they would not pay the bond, then the sheriffs of Madison, Williamson and Davidson Co should seize the negroes. Bond was given in Dec 1828.
Henson's will was recorded August 12, 1840 in Davidson Co., TN. He willed his Negro man Frank and all other property to his wife. He wished everything to be sold at her death and divided between the children. Mark given, no signature. Smith Criddle and Martha Estes executors.
He is buried in the Old City Cemetery, Nashville. (M.A. Conrad)
