Elihu devised a marriage contract when he married Phoeba. In it, he agreed to pay her $800 for her own use, and both paries agreed "to keep and severally control all of the property both real and personal which each or either of the parties may have had at the time of said marriage." Noah was referred to as "her infant child" in their marriage agreement. Essentially, Phoeba gave up her right to dower, but after his death she sued the estate for her portion and won.
Karen White, 2001, e-mail:I recently discovered that my GGG Aunt Phebe J White married Elihu Crandle in 1857. While searching, though, I also found marriage records for an Elihu Crandle:
CRANDLE, Elihu YOUNGS, Mary 22 Apr 1852
CRANDALL, Elihu WHITE, Sarah 10 May 1855
There was a 59 year old widow Mary Young and a 17 year old Mary Young in Fayette.
The other marriage -- to Sarah WHITE is even more interesting. Phebe's mother (my GGG Grandmother) was a widow at this time and I've had a difficult time tracing her after 1853. She's the only Sarah White listed in the 1850 Fayette County Census. Do you think there's any chance he married Sarah first and then Phebe?
