Census: 1880, in Hartford Twp., Van Buren Co., MI. Census: 1860, in New

Providence T, Union Co., NJ. Occupation: Farmer. Individual number 10.

Edwin was listed as farmer in the 1880 census, with two children, living on South Haven Road, Hartford Town. He was a farmer in the 1900 census with 7 children living with them.

Lulu Holcomb: "When I was little my father raised horses, sent to France, paid $1000 for a brood mare but never had any colts but she was a beautiful dark brown and so good to use and care for. Then he left horses and built a cow barn the length of the barn and a hay storage for the north end from the ground to the peak. I remember before that going to the cheese factory with Pa and bringing home a big wedge of cheese. Pa was born in New Jersey in 1850 came to Michigan I think in 1856 but one of his sisters was born in Hartford 1856 but three were older than she. Grandpa Day had a grant from the gov. for 80 acres on the S.W. corner of the township and all of my family went through school there. I just remember my grandma Day, but grandpa lived with us a while but went back home after his youngest sister was married. He was not a farmer but was a good gardener, right next to the schoolyard.

"...We, Pa, Ma, Gusta and I came to P.R. that winter, back in spring 1907. We moved a little ways south and that winter Lena and Loyd and Edwin and Harold were home quite a while getting ready to go to Arizona as Lloyd had TB....[No date] Pa had a man helping him but he caught him taking the team off the (?) so fired him. John, though he was going to work at midnight drove the 2 miles west & 2 miles south of town to help pa with the chores so Ma wouldn't have to...When Pa learned of [the mortgage of $2500 on a farm near Battle Creek. he said he would come up and pay it off which and I still have the paper. When he told Frank, he was living there then, Frank said "If you have money to do that you have enough money to put a roof on the barn." Pa told him "Lulu has just as much right to some of my money as you have, so he came."

News Item: Edwin A. Day, aged 83 years, passed away very suddenly on Wednesday from a heart attack. He had been in town and was walking to his home s little over two miles southeast of the city on M-37 when a neighbor, James Crawley came along and asked him to ride. The two men were visiting, and when Mr. Day did not respond, Mr. Crawley became alarmed and hurried to the Day home, but the aged man had passed away before the house was reached. One could not meet Mr. Day without realizing at once his keen mind and deep interest in community, national and world affairs, as he was a great reader, a thinker, and a constant student. It was his custom to walk to the services at the Methodist Church every Sunday morning when possible, then someone would take him home.

Their marriage license in Van Buren Co., lists his occupation as "farmer." They were married by S.C. Woodward, M.G.

He married Sarah Ann Bailey (16) (A17), 26 Jan 1876, in Hartford,
