60. Elizabeth Coe[7] Wood (Daniel Smith, 112) (A65). Born, 22 Feb 1787, in

NJ[36]. Died, 5 Jun 1884. Census: 1850 in New Providence Twp., Essex Co., NJ.

Census: 1860, in New Providence Twp., Union Co., NJ. Census: 1870, in New

Providence Twp., Union Co., NJ.

The 1870 census found her living with her son Samuel and his family.

Wood (1954), from a speech by Edwin A. Day, 1882: "Present [at the prayer meeting under the leadership of 'Johnny Robinson,' later a Methodist minister, at which Methodism at New Providence was instituted] was Betsey Wood, a girl of fourteen years..."

Wood (1954), from a letter written by George Day to Stephen S. Day, 1916: "Your grandmother inherited from her forebears no such traits that marked her husband...as a counterpoise to the harshness and stiffness of her husband, Betsey Day was just what was needed. She was industrious and an admirable cook. Never a woman could so fry cat fish and eels or make pumpkin pies. She was easy going and never worried much. She knew her husband well and was the friend of the boys--always standing between them and their father whenever anything untoward happened. She enjoyed her religion very much indeed. To sit in a rocking chair at a camp meeting and listen to the preaching and singing was her idea of bliss. Betsey Day made up in her kindness and geniality for lack of conscience. None of the boys would ascribe to their mother such success in the development of character as they eventually attained to. She cared for their bodies and wished well for their souls; but it was not hers to develop moral or mental characters.

She married[84] Stephen Day (59) (A64).
