A letter from F.M. Wright to the Preble Co., OH library (1980): "Adam Reid, an immigrant from North Ireland (Ulster), probably came in the period 1739-41-- years of especially heavy immigration into the American colonies due to famine and depression in Ulster. Like many Ulster Scot settlers he followed the Shenandoah Valley into Virginia (from eastern Pennsylvania) and settled circa 1745 in that portion of Augusta County, Virginia, later subdivided as Rockbridge County. He and his wife Barbara were members of the Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church (oldest in the county and still in existence. He died about 1786, and his will mentions wife Barbara, sons William and Daniel and daughter 'Katron Wilson.' The latter was probably 'Eva Katherine' since her mother was Dutch and this is a characteristic Dutch (or German) pattern for given names. Adam Reid was probably born circa 1720."
From History of Augusta Co., Carrier (1953): "In the southern part of the settlement, on the triple forks of the Shenandoah, near the present village of Fisherville, the division of the congregation, known as Tinkling Spring, worshipped....'The members of the congregation were distinguished...for the part they took in the Indian wars, and furnished some of the leading military men in the border wars...'"
