In the 1820 census, Abel's family consisted of 1 male under 10, 1 male 18-26 (Abel), and 2 females 26-45. In 1850, Abel was the county jailor and a teacher and lived with Martha, Abel A., a saddler, in school, Susan ("idiot") and Ainon C., in school. I didn't write all this down. The 1860 census lists Abel as a "gardener" with a tax value of $300. His second wife Martha and children Aaron, William, Alex, Allen, James, and Martha were living with him. The 1870 census claimed that he is a jailor worth $200 and $100. He was living with Martha, and A.L., James, and Martha, as well as Ellen J., widow, 3 of her children, Margaret Lemaster, a 30 year old domestic servant, Milton Shlippy, a shoemaker, and Osker Garret, "In Jail."

Stinson (1988): "Court of 26 Nov 1818: Abel Withrow appt. by Court to be surveyor of the road from the Buffalo Lick to the Low Gap in the place of John Newson, with the following hands to work under him: John Duncan, Jr., Robert Newsom & his hands, Coonrod Newsom & his hands, Robt. Withrow & his hands, & John Newsom & his hands. Court of 27 Jul 1819: John Duncan, Jr. appt. surveyor of road from Buffalo Lick to the Low Gap in place of Abel Withrow, with the following hands: Robert Newsom & his hands, Coonrod Newsom & his hands, Robert Withrow & his hands and John Newsom & his hands. Court of 23 May 1810. Abel Withrow, appt. by Court to be surveyor of the road from Samuel Guinn's Sulphur Springs to the low gap, in the place of John Duncan with the following titheables: Robert Withrow, Alderson Withrow, John Duncan, Sr., John Duncan, Jr., John Newsome, Robert Newsome, Conrod Newsome, & William Meadows who are to assist in clearing and cutting the same. Court of 3 Apr 1821: Abel Withrow, being a man of honesty, and probity and good demeanor is appt. Constable in the Lick Creek District."

Hopewell Baptist Church Started in 1790 (Donnelly, 1967): "Amwell Baptist Church, according to James O.A. Dietz was organized at a place on Lick Creek, now known as Low Gap. It was organized at Abel Withrow's on April 22, 1824, on a Thursday."
Pen Pictures from the Garden of the World: A biography of Abel A. Withrow says that "When he was twelve years of age [1845], he was taken to Greensburg, Indiana by his parents Abel and Susan (Jordan) Withrow."
